Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Killer

Carbon monoxide is a very poisonous gas which can be given off by the most common appliances in your home or workplace.  It is odorless, invisible and extremely dangerous; continuous inhalation may cause paralysis and even death.  One of the best ways to protect your family from this silent killer is to install carbon monoxide detectors on each level and/or each end of your home.

One of the main benefits of having a carbon monoxide alarm is that the CO detector serves as an early warning if any carbon monoxide is leaking into your home.  The noise from the detector is loud enough for everyone in the house to hear and receive sufficient time to get out of the house.  Depending on the hearing ability of those in your home, you may wish to place alarms at opposite ends of the home.

Any heat producing item can produce carbon monoxide, even your gas or propane powered hot water heater, and these are the main reasons for carbon monoxide gas leaks.  It’s an excellent idea to place alarms near such equipment.  Place the carbon monoxide monitor next to areas that you would think the poisonous gas could potentially come from in order to give enough time to vent  the area as quickly as possible.

Carbon monoxide alarms are designed to alert the homeowner when carbon monoxide levels accumulate over a period of time and will alarm before most people would experience any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Installing carbon monoxide alarms with electrochemical sensing technology in the home also provide sufficient protection for residents.  The more accurate a carbon monoxide alarm, the greater the chances of appropriately responding to the problem.

Carbon monoxide alarms offer stability against changing temperatures and humidity to avoid false alarms or the failure of internal circuitry.  This stability also helps them accurately respond to carbon monoxide and not other common household gasses or chemicals such as ammonia.  Wired with battery backup combination carbon monoxide alarms provide two important safety features and benefits.  This alarm includes a voice warning system that announces fire, carbon monoxide, low battery and a smart hush activation feature.  The voice alarm eliminates any confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide hazard.
